Oh, good heavens! Here comes 'Seven-oh-Seven'
The July 1, 2007 FCC deadline on cable deployments of set-tops with embedded security is firmly in sight. The situation may not be of nightmarish proportions yet, but one can imagine that it's keeping engineers across the industry up night - even if they end up with a grace period that will allow them to continue deploying "low-cost" digital boxes with embedded security. This panel will explain how cable operators are moving and juggling inventory to make room for CableCARD-capable set-tops and making other technical and operational preparations for the coming deadline. What are some lessons learned so far with the CableCARD, and what problems could be on the horizon with the new two-way, multi-stream CableCARD? How (and when) will downloadable conditional access technologies come into play?

Moderator:
Leslie Ellis, Independent Analyst/Contributing Editor, CED

Mike Hayashi, Senior Vice President of Advanced Engineering and Technology, Time Warner Cable
Dave Clark, Director, Product Strategy & Management, Home Entertainment Products, Subscriber Networks, Scientific Atlanta

The Anatomy of the Modular-CMTS
For years, the cable industry has endeavored to break down the major service silos of voice, video and data. While IP technology will help them get there long-term, operators must also look to break down the "micro-silos," as well. One platform that will help operators do that is the modular-cable modem termination system, which will allow operators to mix and match QAMs and share QAM resources for a range of services and applications, including VOD, high-speed data and switched digital broadcast. This session will break down the components and roles of the M-CMTS and discuss potential timelines for trials and commercial deployments.
