From Discovery to Licensure: The Informatics Continuum
Live Q&A session will immediately follow
Abstract:
Early-stage research applications take on the flavor of the clinical world and the nuances associated with pulling together clinical trials information for the purpose of developing a submission. However, as the arc of research enters late stage development, the informatics needs undergo a chameleon-like transformation to resemble a mainstream QC architecture. This discussion will center on the changing informatics needs associated with this continuum, and the intricate integration and project/program management planning tasks that are attendant to the complexity of this transformation.

Laboratory Informatics in Pharmaceutical R&D
Live Q&A session will immediately follow
Abstract:
Informatics continues to serve the pharmaceutical industry at the research and discovery level in the form of bioinformatics, genomics and proteomics; additionally, the pipeline between research and product development can be strengthened through the application of Laboratory Informatics (LI). Effective management of information-intensive processes including experimental design, data acquisition and analysis, results archival and retrieval, regulatory compliance, and validation creates an opportunity to leverage strategic planning and increase efficiency. Members from the LI Team at ALZA Corporation, a leader in drug delivery technology, will discuss current areas of need and opportunity for increased utilization of informatics in the pharmaceutical R&D process.

The Need for Process Simulation in Lab Informatics Initiatives
Live Q&A session will immediately follow
Abstract:
Effective and precise mapping of workflows and definition of business requirements have long been recognized as absolute requirements for successful implementation of informatics systems like LIMS in labs. With the advent of increased emphasis on new informatics tools, like ELN, that need to be integrated at a level much more intimate with the lab processes, traditional process mapping approaches are no longer adequate. In addition, many organizations have recently raised their expectations of informatics project teams and are requiring demonstrable and verifiable process improvement metrics before approving budgets for these programs. In order to meet these new expectations, a tool like dynamic process modeling and simulation is required to adequately model the complex interactions between process and new technology and to provide budget approvers with the hard metrics they need to make confident business decisions on where they should spend informatics program funds. This presentation will provide some background on what is involved in using a tool like process modeling and simulation for labs, as well as some of its distinct advantages over conventional static modeling approaches, and will present a lab informatics case study to show how modeling and simulation can provide meaningful benefits to lab informatics programs.

Integrating the Discovery Laboratory
Live Q&A session will immediately follow
Abstract:
One of the greatest challenges facing research operations is the consolidation of information from the disparate information silos that have propagated in the last decade. Not only are scientists faced with having to access multiple systems on a daily basis, the facts these systems contain are often not consolidated, making it difficult to create new knowledge on compounds and materials. Coming to the market only recently, new tools are available to research organization to build bridges between information islands and to create an integrated research knowledge base. Our expert panel will discuss how these technologies are being used and best practices for deployment.
