This presentation will discuss
the use of wireless communications in modern transportation
systems. Over the past several years the cost and
performance of wireless systems and devices have arrived
at the thresholds required for attractive applications
for both industrial and consumer markets. The technology
to be discussed includes WiFi, Dedicated Short -Range
Communications (DSRC), GPS, UWB, Bluetooth, cellular
and WiMax. Regulatory and standards issues will be
discussed along with challenges yet to be resolved.
Applications include vehicle-to-vehicle communications,
vehicle-to-curb communications, vehicle tracking and
location, traffic management and broadband access.
