Unlicensed
Technologies
The presentation will discuss
the issues involved in developing an UMA reference design
and its application to UMA-enabled mobile phones. Furthermore,
it will highlight solutions using the UMA blueprint
as an example. Issues
in unlicensed wireless include security, coexistence
and compliance, just to name a few and the design
issues around these devices are extremely fluid at
present. This session will address these and other
issues from a design perspective. The attendee will
be given a perspective on the technologies, their
issues and gain a clear roadmap of the design roadmap
of unlicensed technologies.

Making
it simple for mobile phone users to constantly connect
to voice, data and entertainment services is a goal
that many semiconductor manufacturers strive for.
Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) is a fairly new technology
that enables cellphone users to roam and handover
between cellular networks and public/private unlicensed
wireless networks (including Bluetooth and 802.11)
using dual-mode mobile handsets easily. UMA technology
allows seamless switching between networks without
interruption for voice and multimedia services. It
also offers consumers the flexibility of being able
to use a more cost-effective network for mobile communications.
